Description
Swoger catalog number D1965-3c. This 62mm bronze medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to commemorate Castle Clinton, the historic circular fort at Battery Park on Manhattan's southern tip. Originally built as Southwest Battery between 1808 and 1811 to defend New York Harbor during tensions leading to the War of 1812, Castle Clinton subsequently served as the entertainment venue Castle Garden, America's first immigrant processing center handling over eight million arrivals from 1855 to 1890, the New York City Aquarium, and finally a national monument. The 62mm diameter provides a large format for depicting the fort's distinctive circular architecture. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward. This bronze medal is the base-metal companion to the silver Castle Clinton issue in the D1965-3 series.
