Description
The 1964 Specimen Kennedy Half Dollar is a specimen half dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Kennedy Half Dollars Silver 1964 to Date series. The obverse features John F. Kennedy facing left, based on the presidential medal by Gilroy Roberts and the reverse displays the Presidential Seal — a heraldic eagle with shield, olive branch, and arrows. Rushed into production weeks after President Kennedy's assassination. Both Philadelphia and Denver struck massive quantities that were immediately hoarded. NGC grades these coins as specimens (SP) and traces them to fresh-die strikes the Philadelphia Mint sent each year to the Smithsonian's National Coin Collection; perhaps two dozen 1964 sets surfaced on the market in the early 1990s. NGC says they are not Special Mint Set coins. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 12.5 grams, 30.61 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #39971.
