Coin Details
Description
Swoger catalog number D1964-1b. This silver medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to commemorate the centennial of Nevada statehood. Nevada was admitted to the Union on October 31, 1864, as the 36th state β rushed to statehood just eight days before the 1864 presidential election to ensure additional Electoral College votes and congressional support for the Thirteenth Amendment abolishing slavery. The state constitution was famously telegraphed to Washington, D.C. in the longest and most expensive telegram in history at the time. Known as the "Battle Born State" for its admission during the Civil War, Nevada's early economy was driven by the Comstock Lode silver and gold mines near Virginia City. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward.
