1964 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-010

Description

Expertly examined by John Conway, this 1964 proof Jefferson Nickel carries a complex doubled die reverse combining Class II and Class V hub doubling — Distorted and Pivoted Hub Doubling acting together. Formerly listed as WDDR-217, this variety replaces the original WDDR-010, which was delisted as doubled working hub and reclassified as WWHR-002. The reverse displays Class II and V tripled spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM increasing left to right, along with close doubled spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA also increasing left to right. The Class V component pivots from eight o'clock. Obverse examination reveals a minor doubled die obverse as well. Reverse die markers include a small gouge between the lower ST of STATES, a small gouge at the upper right of S of PLURIBUS, and a gouge above the left upright of the second U of PLURIBUS. Two distinct doubling classes on a single die reflects multiple misalignments during hubbing. As a proof issue, the polished fields provide high contrast that accentuates the tripled spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM. Reverse: Small die gouge between lower portions of ST of STATES; small die gouge to upper right of S of PLURIBUS; small die gouge above left upright of second U of PLURIBUS.
