1964 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-007
ErrorDescription
Formerly listed as WDDR-221 and attributed by John Conway, this proof 1964 Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse was renumbered to WDDR-007 after the original WDDR-007 was delisted as a doubled working hub (see WWHR-001). The variety displays close Class II distorted hub doubling on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM, with spread increasing from left to right. Reverse die markers include a die dot inside the right arch, a die dot above the center arch, a die dot between U and S of PLURIBUS, and a die dot below PL of PLURIBUS. No obverse die markers have been noted. Cross-referenced as Wexler 1964 WDDR-007 Proof, the four die dots clustered around the arches and PLURIBUS provide an unusually rich set of secondary attribution points. The 1964 proof Jefferson Nickel was the last proof issue before proof production was suspended from 1965 through 1967 during the coinage shortage, making proof varieties from this date terminal issues of the pre-Special Mint Set era. Struck as a proof at the Philadelphia Mint in 75% copper and 25% nickel.
