Description

Light spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA increasing from left to right characterizes DDR-060 on the 1964 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel, where the progressive intensification of doubling across the reverse lettering reveals the rotational axis of hub displacement during die manufacture. Die markers tracked under UVC-1728 and DMR-071 document a three-stage die life: Stage A with both reverse and obverse at Early Die State, Stage B at Mid Die State (unconfirmed), and Stage C at Late Die State (unconfirmed). The left-to-right increasing spread pattern is diagnostic of a pivot point located near the left side of the reverse, where elements closest to the rotation center show minimal displacement while those farthest away exhibit the strongest doubling. Philadelphia struck an extraordinary number of Jefferson Nickels in 1964 — the last year before the Special Mint Set transition — generating a massive catalog of die varieties. VarietyVista cataloged this variety as the sixtieth doubled die reverse for the 1964 date, placing it within an extensive family of DDR varieties that collectively document the range of hub displacement patterns possible during the mid-1960s die manufacturing process. The three-stage documentation allows collectors to track die deterioration from early crisp impressions through progressive wear, building chronological die state sets.
