Description

Reaching deep into the VarietyVista catalog as UVC-1650 DMR-069, the 1964 DDR-058 is a proof Jefferson nickel doubled die reverse with medium spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA increasing from left to right. This progressive strengthening of the spread across the legend suggests the hub displacement had a directional component, with greater offset affecting the rightward portion of the inscription. Three die stages have been identified. Stage A places the reverse at early die state with a die gouge on the rim under AT of STATES, while the obverse is also at early die state. Stage B, the mid-die state, and Stage C, the late die state, both remain unconfirmed. As a proof coin struck at the San Francisco Mint, this 1964 issue represents the final year of proof production before the Mint suspended proof sets from 1965 through 1967 during the transition from silver to clad coinage. The directional increase in spread from left to right across UNITED STATES OF AMERICA provides a distinctive diagnostic that distinguishes this from other 1964 proof nickel doubled die reverses where the spread is more uniform across the legend.
