1964-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-010
Error
Description
Among the strongest doubled die reverses in the Jefferson nickel series, the 1964-D WDDR-010 is Class VI (Distended Hub Doubling), showing very strong centripetal spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and slightly on FIVE CENTS and MO of MONTICELLO. Two obverse die stages are documented: Stage A is very late die state with numerous scratches between L and I of LIBERTY; Stage B is a new early-die-state obverse. Reverse markers for Stage A include a die gouge dot left of the first U in PLURIBUS and another below and between the second U and S. By Stage B, the reverse is heavily abraded — lower AMERICA letters are weak or missing, and a die clash mark runs through the second O of MONTICELLO. The transition from worn Stage A obverse to fresh Stage B demonstrates how the Mint rotated individual dies within active presses. The 1964-D had enormous mintage, yet strong Class VI doubled dies remain desirable regardless of host-coin commonality.
