Description

Recognized with a "Best Of" designation among nickel doubled die varieties, WDDR-008 on the 1964-D Jefferson Nickel exhibits an extremely strong Class VI distended hub doubling spread toward the center on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, FIVE CENTS, MONTICELLO, and both sides of the building facade — effectively encompassing every major design element and inscription on Felix Schlag's reverse. Die markers note no significant obverse features, while the reverse displays four strong die scratches between the E and P of E PLURIBUS and the building, plus a die scratch running SSW from the upper left of the T of CENTS. The "Best Of" classification combined with the "extremely strong" intensity rating across six distinct design areas places this among the most dramatic and visually impressive doubled die reverses in the entire Jefferson Nickel series. Class VI distended hub doubling occurs when the working hub expands radially during the impression process, creating an inward (toward center) spread pattern where all design elements appear to contract or thicken toward the die center — and when this mechanism operates at extremely strong intensity, the secondary impressions become clearly separated from the primary design on virtually every element of the die face. The 1964-D Jefferson Nickel was struck at the Denver Mint in 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.00 grams with a 21.2 mm diameter, the final year before the proof set production hiatus and a date of historically high nickel mintages. The four strong die scratches between E PLURIBUS and the building provide prominent authentication markers, and the extremely strong doubling should be detectable even under 5x magnification, with the centripetal spread direction visible across the full reverse field.
