Description

Fifth in the reverse doubled die census for the 1964-D Jefferson nickel, WDDR-005 displays close Class II Distorted Hub Doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA — the two primary inscription groups that frame Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse design. Class II doubling results from rotational displacement during the hubbing process, where the working hub pivoted around a center point between impressions, and the close designation indicates the secondary impression landed very near the primary, producing thickened letter strokes visible only under careful magnification. No obverse die markers were noted, but the reverse carries two useful diagnostics: a slanted die scratch between the C and E of CENTS, and a die scratch inside the upper portion of the R in AMERICA. These reverse die scratches provide the secondary identification points necessary to confirm the correct die before evaluating the subtle close-spread doubling.
