1964 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004

Description

Presenting a wide spread across multiple design elements, this 1964 Proof Jefferson Nickel reverse exhibits Class II distorted hub doubling on STATES OF AMERICA increasing from left to right. Additional doubling appears on BUS of PLURIBUS, UNUM, LLO of MONTICELLO, CENTS, and the right side of the building — an unusually broad distribution affecting both lettering and architecture simultaneously. Class II doubling arises when the hub face warps under hydraulic pressure during die manufacture, producing asymmetric displacement across the design surface. The breadth of affected elements suggests substantial hub distortion. Philadelphia produced all proof Jefferson Nickels through 1964, the final year before proof production entered a three-year hiatus during the transition to Special Mint Sets (1965-1967). The 1964 date represents the end of an era for Philadelphia proof nickels, and its DDR varieties document the last proof dies manufactured under the traditional process.
