1964-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002
Error
Description
Recognized as a "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die variety — a designation reserved for the most significant and desirable doubled dies in the Jefferson series — this 1964-D WDDR-002 displays Class VI distended hub doubling with a very strong spread toward the center on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, FIVE CENTS, the M and second O of MONTICELLO, and both sides of the building. Class VI doubling occurs when the hub expands or distends during the hubbing process, pushing design elements outward from center and creating a distinctive radial spread. Struck at the Denver Mint on the final year before the composition change, this regular strike Jefferson Nickel on Felix Schlag's design carries clear reverse die markers: a die gouge above the first A of AMERICA and another midway between the T of CENTS and the F of OF. No significant obverse die markers have been noted. The strength and breadth of the doubling across multiple reverse elements — lettering, denomination, and architectural detail — justifies the "Best Of" recognition and makes this variety a priority target for Jefferson Nickel cherrypickers.
