1964-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005
ErrorDescription
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1964-D 10¢ WDDR-005, this Roosevelt Silver Dime exhibits a spread toward the center visible on USA, ONE DIME, E PLU, and the NUM of UNUM — a convergent doubling pattern where the secondary hub impression shifted inward relative to the primary, creating doubled images that appear on the interior side of each affected inscription element. This center-directed spread produces a distinctive diagnostic signature where the secondary letters appear between the primary lettering and the coin's center rather than toward the rim. Obverse die markers include a blunt tail on the 9 in the date, a nearly horizontal die scratch above IN, and numerous other die scratches throughout the obverse from heavy abrading of the die — indicating this obverse die underwent aggressive maintenance polishing, likely to remove clash marks or other surface defects. The reverse shows a die gouge to the right of the top of the T in UNITED, a die gouge inside the upper N in ONE, and a die scratch running east-northeast through the upper NUM of UNUM. No cross-references to other cataloging systems are currently known. The 1964-D Roosevelt Dime was struck at the Denver Mint in the final year of 90% silver composition for the denomination, weighing 2.50 grams with a diameter of 17.9 mm, before the Coinage Act of 1965 ended silver dime production. Designed by John R. Sinnock, the Roosevelt Dime obverse features a left-facing portrait of Franklin D. Roosevelt. The heavy abrading noted on the obverse die distinguishes this variety from WDDR-006, which shows a similar spread pattern on the same date-mint but carries different die marker diagnostics.
