1964-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-016

Description

Sixteenth in the reverse doubled die census for the 1964-D Roosevelt silver dime, DDR-016 exhibits light spread localized to DIME and AMERICA on John R. Sinnock's reverse design. Unlike DDR-013 from the same date which affects four separate inscription zones, DDR-016 concentrates its visible doubling on just two words, suggesting a hub displacement angle that primarily impacted the lower and upper portions of the reverse while leaving other areas below the detection threshold. VarietyVista assigned identifiers UVC-472 and DMR-020, documenting three die stages with a particularly informative Stage C: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B at mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state where the reverse shows LDS characteristics and a die crack has developed across the forehead and hair extending to the rim at approximately the K-1 position on the obverse. The progressive die crack at Stage C provides a dramatic secondary diagnostic for late-state specimens, as the crack running across Roosevelt's forehead creates a visible raised line on struck coins that is far more obvious than the light reverse doubling itself. Denver's enormous 1964 production of approximately 1.36 billion silver Roosevelt dimes — the last year of 90% silver composition — generated hundreds of die pairs and a correspondingly deep DDR census. The comment identifies the obverse as ODV-0011 (blunt 9), matching the same obverse design variant noted on DDR-013, which raises the possibility that these two DDRs share an obverse die but are paired with different reverse dies showing independent doubling events. Collectors should first verify the blunt 9 diagnostic on the obverse and check for the forehead die crack to establish die state, then examine DIME and AMERICA under 15x magnification.
