1964-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-012

Description

Twelfth in the extensive reverse doubled die census for the 1964-D Roosevelt silver dime, DDR-012 shows light spread on OF AMERICA, the M of UNUM, and DIME — three inscription areas scattered across John R. Sinnock's reverse design. VarietyVista assigned identifiers UVC-468 and DMR-016, with a particularly informative three-stage die progression: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B where the reverse has reached mid die state with a small die chip developing on Roosevelt's nostril on the obverse, and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The nostril die chip at Stage B provides an excellent intermediate die state marker, as die chips are progressive defects that either appear or do not — their presence confirms the die has advanced beyond Stage A without yet reaching the full deterioration of late die state. Denver struck an enormous quantity of Roosevelt dimes in 1964, the final year of 90% silver dime production before the Coinage Act of 1965 eliminated silver from circulating dimes and quarters. The obverse die is classified as ODV-011, described as "blunt 9," meaning the numeral 9 in the date exhibits a distinctive blunted or truncated appearance that distinguishes this obverse die from the standard digit configuration — a characteristic established during die manufacture rather than through wear. This ODV designation adds a second attributable feature to the die marriage beyond the reverse doubling. Light spread affecting OF AMERICA, M of UNUM, and DIME spans widely separated inscription elements, suggesting a hub misalignment that produced measurable but not dramatic displacement across multiple regions of the reverse. Collectors should confirm the blunt 9 on the obverse as a die identification step before examining the reverse inscriptions under 15x magnification for the light doubling.
