1964-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-010

Description

Attributed by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-465 and DMR-013, the 1964-D DDR-010 Roosevelt Silver Dime displays medium spread on ONE DIME with light spread on UNITED and OF AMERICA. The differential spread intensity — medium on the denomination versus light on the legend — suggests the hub displacement vector produced its strongest offset in the die region corresponding to ONE DIME's position on the lower reverse, with progressively less displacement affecting the upper inscription areas. This variety is paired with obverse die ODV-011, characterized by a blunt 9 in the date. Four documented die stages trace this working die's progressive deterioration: Stage A (EDS, unconfirmed); Stage B (MDS) showing a die crack from the lower torch through I to M of DIME, a die crack from the rim north through M of DIME to the right stem, a die chip on the nose, a die crack across the upper hair, and a die crack from the head to the rim at K-1; Stage C (LDS, unconfirmed). The extensive Stage B die crack network — five separate cracks and a die chip across both obverse and reverse — documents significant die fatigue, creating multiple secondary attribution checkpoints. The Roosevelt Dime was designed by John R. Sinnock, and the 1964-D represents the final year of 90% silver dime production before the Coinage Act of 1965 ended silver coinage. Struck at the Denver Mint, weighing 2.5 grams at 17.9 mm diameter, the 1964-D saw record-breaking production as the Mint attempted to alleviate the mid-1960s coin shortage. The blunt 9 obverse pairing with ODV-011 provides additional attribution value beyond the reverse doubling alone.
