1964-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-005

Description

Striking the final silver Roosevelt Dimes at Denver, the 1964-D production generated DDR-005 with light spread visible on OF AMERICA and DIME — the variety's subtle diagnostics concentrated in the lower reverse field. Die markers tracked under UVC-459 and DMR-007 document three stages with notably detailed late-state characteristics: Stage A in Early Die State (unconfirmed), Stage B with both reverse and obverse in Mid-Die State (MDS), and Stage C showing numerous die scratches running North-South on the reverse at LDS, a die chip in the lower portion of the nostril at LDS, and a straggly die crack from the upper forehead across the hair to the back of the head. The obverse is additionally classified as ODV-011 (Blunt 9), linking this die to a known obverse die variety where the 9 in the date shows a blunted terminal. Cataloged by VarietyVista, five DDRs for the 1964-D Roosevelt Silver Dime reflect the enormous volume of dies consumed during the final year of silver dime production — Denver struck approximately 1.36 billion dimes in 1964 as the Mint raced to build silver coin stockpiles before the pending composition change. The Stage C die markers are especially rich, providing multiple secondary diagnostics for specimens from the die's terminal production phase. John R. Sinnock's design, entering its nineteenth year, saw its final silver-composition Denver Mint production on this date before the switch to copper-nickel clad in 1965.
