1964 (D) Roosevelt Dime - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002 / DDR-003

Description

DDR-003, which Wexler numbers WDDR-002, is a doubled die reverse on the 1964-D Roosevelt dime with a medium spread on UNITED, on ONE DIME and on E PLURIBUS UNUM. Both catalogs cite it as FS-802 in the Cherrypickers' Guide (Wexler writes FS-10-1964D-802). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties describes a very strong Class V CW spread on UNITED, the first S of STATES, ONE DIME, the dots, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the olive branch and leaves. At obverse stage A several scratches cross the BER of LIBERTY, including a strong one linking the middle of the E to the base of the R; at stage B many scratches surround the head. At reverse stage A a scratch joins the bottom of the first U of PLURIBUS to the N of ONE and several scratches cross UNITED. At reverse stage B long scratches run from the middle of the NE of ONE to the D of DIME and from the base of the second S of STATES up to the oak branches' tops, with many others across the reverse. Frank Baumann submitted the coin, and CONECA lists the die as 3-R-V. VarietyVista, crediting Joe Feld, lists the obverse of stages A and B as ODV-011 (blunt 9) and that of stage C as ODV-00?, its 9 style not yet identified. Under UVC-457 and DMR-005, stage A has the reverse in an early die state and the obverse in a middle one, with a clash in the field in front of and on the bridge of the nose, many obverse scratches, and a strong scratch linking the middle of the E with the R of LIBERTY. At stage B many scratches cover both sides, which are in a middle die state. At stage C, under UVC-491 and DMR-039, the reverse is in a late die state with many scratches and the obverse has been changed to a new die in an early-middle state.
