Description

Displaying a spread toward the center on ONE and UNITED STATES OF, the 1964-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-016 is notable for the breadth of its doubling across the upper reverse inscription. The die markers recorded for this variety span both sides of the coin: on the obverse, a die gouge extends from the upper right vertical bar of the T in LIBERTY just under the horizontal crossbar — a precise and distinctive marker that identifies this particular obverse die. The reverse markers are concentrated in the upper inscription area: two short vertical die gouges appear to the left of the upper right M in AMERICA, a die gouge extends from under the loop of the P in PLURIBUS, another gouge appears inside the first U in PLURIBUS, a dot-like die gouge sits between the first T in STATES and the E in PLURIBUS, and a short vertical die gouge appears to the left of the middle of the T in UNITED. The clustering of reverse die markers in the UNITED STATES and PLURIBUS area overlaps with the zone where the doubling is most visible, creating a dense region of diagnostic features that should facilitate positive identification. The spread toward the center affecting ONE and the full upper inscription UNITED STATES OF suggests that the hub displacement during die manufacture was oriented so as to shift the secondary image inward from the rim, compressing the design elements toward the coin's center. This variety originated during the Denver Mint's monumental 1964 production campaign of 3,799,071,500 cents. Struck on a 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc planchet weighing 3.11 grams at 19mm diameter.
