1964-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004

Description

Displaying a close spread toward the center on the lower letters of ONE CENT, the 1964-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004 is a variety whose diagnostic features include both the doubling pattern and a distinctive set of die markers cataloged on both sides of the coin. On the obverse, a horizontal die gouge appears in the field above the right side of the B in LIBERTY, accompanied by a die gouge (appearing as a dot) to the left of the upper I in IN. The reverse carries its own set of identifying markers: a die gouge under the left joint of the N in UNITED, light die scratches extending upward from the diagonal stroke of the N in UNITED, a dot-like die gouge to the lower left of the U in UNITED, and two light die gouges to the left of the upper I in AMERICA. These die markers serve as a fingerprint for this specific working die, enabling collectors to confirm attribution even on coins where the close doubling on ONE CENT might be difficult to distinguish from neighboring catalog entries. The close spread toward the center indicates a Class II doubling mechanism, in which the working hub shifted inward relative to the die blank between hubbing impressions, compressing the secondary image of the reverse design elements toward the center of the die. This variety was struck at the Denver Mint during its record 1964 production of 3,799,071,500 Lincoln cents, the culmination of the Mint's effort to combat the nationwide coin shortage. Struck on a 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc planchet weighing 3.11 grams at 19mm diameter.
