1964-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-025
Error
Description
Cross-referenced as CONECA 17-R-II-C (Wexler Variety ID: 1964-D 1¢ WDDR-025), this doubled die reverse variety displays a spread toward the center on USA, the left side of the Lincoln Memorial, ONE, and slightly on CENT and the designer's initials FG. The CONECA classification confirms this as a Class II doubled die — a variety in which the working hub shifted inward relative to the die blank between hubbing impressions, compressing the secondary design image toward the center of the die. The independent cross-referencing between the Wexler and CONECA cataloging systems provides collectors with dual attribution anchors for positive identification. Reverse die markers include a strong, horizontal die scratch running through the lower E in AMERICA just above the lower crossbar, and a heavy die gouge extending from the rim above the E in UNITED to the upper right T in UNITED. No notable obverse die markers were recorded. These reverse die markers serve as a diagnostic fingerprint for this specific working die, enabling definitive attribution even when the doubling itself is subtle enough to require magnification for confirmation. The variety originated at the Denver Mint during its record 1964 production of 3,799,071,500 Lincoln cents — the highest single-mint output for the denomination at that time, produced in response to the nationwide coin shortage. The 1964-D cent was the last Denver Mint issue to carry a mint mark before the 1965-67 suspension. Struck on a 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc planchet weighing 3.11 grams at 19mm diameter.
