Description

Showing a spread toward the center on the UN in UNITED, the lower left Memorial, ONE CENT, the designer's initials FG, and the lower right Memorial, the 1964-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-014 (Wexler Variety ID: 1964-D 1¢ WDDR-014, no additional cross-references known) affects both the inscriptions and the architectural elements of the Gasparro reverse. The Wexler Team noted no obverse die markers for this variety, which means that attribution must rely primarily on the reverse die markers and the doubling pattern itself. The reverse markers include a die gouge over the U in UNITED, a strong die gouge at the rim over the second A in AMERICA, short die gouges extending west from the upper E and S in STATES, and a short die scratch running south-southwest from under the Memorial over the T in CENT. The strong die gouge at the rim over the second A in AMERICA is a particularly distinctive marker — rim-adjacent features are often more prominent and easier to locate than those in the interior design areas, making this gouge a useful first-check diagnostic when examining candidate coins. The absence of obverse markers does not diminish the variety's authenticity; it simply indicates that the obverse die paired with this reverse was relatively clean at the time of examination, without the scratches, gouges, or cracks that accumulate through die wear and clashing events. This variety was produced during the Denver Mint's record 1964 production of 3,799,071,500 cents on a 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc planchet weighing 3.11 grams at 19mm diameter.
