1964-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-010
Error
Description
Bearing the Wexler Team designation WDDR-010 (Wexler Variety ID: 1964-D 1¢ WDDR-010, no additional cross-references known), this doubled die reverse variety exhibits a spread on UNI in UNITED, the left and right sides of the Memorial, the designer's initials FG, and ONE CENT — a broad distribution of doubling that reflects a hub displacement affecting multiple design zones of the Gasparro reverse. The die markers cataloged for this variety are notably extensive on the reverse: a vertical die gouge to the right of the lower N in UNITED, a vertical die gouge over the R in AMERICA, a very strong die gouge over the E in ONE, a dot-like die gouge to the right of the middle of the N in CENT, and a strong die gouge between the lower N and I in UNITED. The obverse carries a die gouge extending from the lower left W in WE. Additional die state data may be available in the Wexler files. The number and prominence of these reverse die markers — particularly the very strong gouge over the E in ONE and the strong gouge between N and I in UNITED — make this variety comparatively straightforward to authenticate once a candidate coin is located, as these distinctive features should be readily apparent under moderate magnification. The die that produced WDDR-010 served at the Denver Mint during the record 1964 production of 3,799,071,500 Lincoln cents, the largest single-mint output for the denomination. This was the final year that Denver cents carried the "D" mint mark. Struck on a standard 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc planchet at 19mm diameter.
