Description

Displaying a very close spread on ONE CENT, the 1964-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-009 (Wexler Variety ID: 1964-D 1¢ WDDR-009) presents an important diagnostic challenge: the Wexler Team notes that the photographed example also shows strike doubling on much of the lettering, meaning that collectors examining this variety must carefully distinguish between the genuine hub doubling that defines the DDR and the mechanical doubling caused by die bounce or shift during the striking process. Hub doubling — the DDR itself — produces crisp, shelf-like secondary images with consistent depth and positioning on every coin struck from the die, while strike doubling (also called machine doubling) creates flat, shelf-like distortions that vary from coin to coin and carry no numismatic premium. The die markers for WDDR-009 include an obverse feature — a short die scratch running northwest to southeast just to the right of Lincoln's nose — and several reverse markers: a short die gouge running west from the lower fifth column, a die scratch running north-northeast from the upper E in E PLURIBUS UNUM to midway between the T and A in STATES, several light die scratches running roughly horizontally through ATES in STATES and CENT, and a die gouge present to the right of the upper left side of the M in AMERICA. This variety was struck at the Denver Mint during the 1964 production run of 3,799,071,500 cents, the peak of the emergency coinage program designed to combat the nationwide shortage. Struck on a 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc planchet weighing 3.11 grams.
