1964-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-008
Error
Description
Attributed by the Wexler Team with no additional cross-references currently known (Wexler Variety ID: 1964-D 1¢ WDDR-008), this doubled die reverse variety exhibits a very close spread toward the center on ONE and OF, with the notation that earlier die states may show additional close doubling beyond what is visible on the cataloged specimen. This observation about die state dependency is significant: as a die accumulates strikes and undergoes periodic polishing or lapping to restore surface quality, subtle doubling features can be progressively diminished, meaning that early die state examples of WDDR-008 may display stronger or more widespread doubling than later impressions. The die markers recorded for this variety include an obverse feature — a short die gouge in the field below the second T in TRUST and east of Lincoln's nose — and reverse markers consisting of a dot-like die gouge inside the U in UNITED and dot-like die gouges to the right of the upper and lower second A in AMERICA. These markers serve as essential diagnostics for confirming attribution, particularly since the very close doubling on ONE and OF may be subtle enough to require careful comparison with reference photographs under at least 10x magnification. This variety was produced during the Denver Mint's record-setting 1964 cent production of 3,799,071,500 pieces, the highest single-mint Lincoln cent output at that time, during the last year that Denver cents carried the "D" mint mark before the 1965-67 suspension. Struck on a 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc planchet at 3.11 grams and 19mm diameter.
