1964-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-019
ErrorDescription
Designated a "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die Variety by Tony Russo, this 1964-D Jefferson Nickel WDDR-019 ranks among the most desirable doubled die reverses in the nickel series. The variety exhibits Class VI distended hub doubling, a mechanism where the working hub expands slightly between impressions, producing a constant spread across the die face rather than the directional shift seen in other classes. Strong Class VI doubling is visible on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, FIVE CENTS, and the left side of Monticello. The constant spread characteristic of Class VI means the doubling width remains uniform across all affected elements, distinguishing it from the tapered spreads of pivot-based classes. Struck at the Denver Mint on Felix Schlag's 75% copper, 25% nickel composition, this variety belongs to one of the highest-mintage dates in the Jefferson series. Die Markers: Obverse: Small die gouge right of the upper right of B in LIBERTY. Reverse: None noted. Attributed under Wexler Variety ID 1964-D WDDR-019, the "Best Of" designation reflects its strong, easily visible doubling and collectibility within the broader Jefferson Nickel doubled die registry. Reverse: Long die scratch from tip of F of FIVE to S of CENTS; short die gouge on inside left side of U of UNITED; short die gouges between upper portions of U and N of UNITED.
