1964-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-018

Description

Discovered and attributed by Tony Russo, this 1964-D Jefferson Nickel carries Class VI Distended Hub Doubling on the reverse, producing strong extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM with slightly lesser distension on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and FIVE CENTS. Class VI doubling occurs when the hub expands slightly between impressions due to pressure deformation, creating uniformly thickened design elements rather than directional spread. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel at Denver, the 1964-D was produced in enormous quantities during the final year before the Coinage Act of 1965. On the obverse, a strong die scratch extends from Jefferson's chin toward the R of TRUST, and a slanted die scratch appears below the 9 of the date. The reverse carries three short slanted die scratches inside the right arch of Monticello, slanted die scratches below NTS of CENTS, and die scratches below M of UNUM. The coin examined was in late die state, meaning the doubling and markers were observed on a well-worn die that had already produced many coins.
