1964-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-017

Description

Wexler 1964-D WDDR-017 documents a Denver Mint Jefferson Nickel regular strike with Class II Distorted Hub Doubling producing a nice spread across the reverse inscriptions. The doubling is visible on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with a very close but detectable spread on FIVE CENTS. The diminishing intensity from the motto through the denomination reflects the geometry of Class II distortion, where areas farther from the rotational axis display stronger displacement. Die markers include a slanted die scratch below the M of MONTICELLO and a die scratch between the E and first L of MONTICELLO on the reverse. Attributed by Brian A. Ribar, this variety was struck at Denver during a year of historically massive production — the 1964-D Jefferson Nickel mintage exceeded one billion coins as the Mint raced to fill demand amid the nationwide coin shortage preceding the elimination of silver from circulating coinage. The sheer volume of 1964-D nickels means doubled die varieties required enormous populations for discovery, and confirmed attributions like WDDR-017 represent the careful work of variety specialists.
