Closely related to DDR-004 in its affected element range, DDR-005 on the 1964-D Jefferson nickel also shows medium spread and extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, FIVE CENTS, the M and last O of MONTICELLO, and both building edges. The identical element coverage but different die markers — UVC-1302 and DMR-013 versus DDR-004's UVC-1301 and DMR-012 — confirms these are products of separate hub doubling events on different working dies, each independently receiving a misaligned secondary hub impression during die production. Denver's unprecedented 1964 nickel output of approximately 1.79 billion pieces consumed an extraordinary number of working dies, dramatically increasing the probability of multiple dies independently acquiring hub doubling defects during manufacture. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse bears the full weight of both varieties' diagnostic zones, with the building edges providing the cleanest geometric references for detecting the dual spread-and-thickness character of the doubling.
