1963 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-075
Error
Description
Sharing the same Class V pivoted hub doubling characteristics as WDDO-074 — a counterclockwise spread pivoting near the 10 o'clock position — the 1963 Proof Lincoln Memorial Cent WDDO-075 displays its secondary image on the bottom of the date and the underside of the bowtie, consistent with the geometry of pivoted doubling where displacement increases with distance from the axis of rotation. Although the doubling pattern resembles WDDO-074, this is a distinct die identified by its own unique set of die markers. On the obverse, a short diagonal die gouge sits to the right of the top of the N in IN GOD WE TRUST, a dot-shaped die gouge appears just above the hair midway between the E of WE and the first T of TRUST, and a short vertical die scratch lies between the upper U and S of TRUST. The reverse die markers include a light die scratch running nearly parallel to the lettering through the center of the U in UNITED almost to the rim, a small die gouge to the right of the center of the D in UNITED, a small dot-shaped die gouge below the second S of STATES, and a short vertical die scratch above the right side of the F in OF. The similarity of die markers between WDDO-074 and WDDO-075 suggests these two dies may have been hubbed in close succession under similar conditions, making careful side-by-side comparison essential for distinguishing them. No additional cross-references are currently known beyond the Wexler designation. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1963 1c Pr WDDO-075, this variety was struck on a 95% copper and 5% zinc planchet using proof dies at the Philadelphia Mint, where the 1963 proof production of 3,075,645 cents was the final uninterrupted proof issue before the coin shortage suspension.
