1963 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-088

Description

Displaying Class II (Distorted Hub) doubling, WDDR-088 on the 1963 Jefferson Nickel shows spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA that increases in strength from left to right across the reverse legends. Distorted Hub doubling arises when the hub itself develops a slight deformation, impressing a subtly warped image into the die — the increasing spread from left to right reflects the geometry of that distortion relative to the die's surface. A slanted die gouge extending downward from the P of PLURIBUS serves as the reverse die marker, providing a reliable secondary diagnostic independent of the doubling. No distinctive obverse die markers have been noted. The 1963 Jefferson Nickel was produced in substantial quantities at Philadelphia, as the series continued its standard copper-nickel composition under the Felix Schlag design.
