1963 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-079

Description

Discovered by Gary G. Wagnon and recognized as a Best Of Nickel Doubled Die Variety, this 1963 Philadelphia Jefferson nickel carries an exceptionally strong Class II distorted hub tripling on the reverse. The spread moves toward the center on E PLURIBUS UNUM, increasing from left to right, with similar doubling on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA that becomes full tripling on AMERICA. Lesser but visible doubling appears on FIVE CENTS and ELLO of MONTICELLO. Cross-referenced as CONECA 80-R-II-C3 and Cherrypickers FS-05-1963-801 (37.3) under Wexler Variety ID 1963 WDDR-079, this ranks among the strongest reverse doubled dies in the Jefferson series. Reverse die markers include a strong die gouge from the lower left N in UNITED southeast toward the rim, a scratch parallel to the rim under TED STAT, and a short scratch northeast from the lower crossbar of F in OF. No obverse markers have been noted. Reverse: Strong die gouge from lower left of N of UNITED southeast toward rim; die scratch parallel to rim under TED STAT of UNITED STATES; short die scratch NE from right end of lower crossbar of F of OF.
