Description

Swoger catalog number D1963-1c. This bronze medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to commemorate the centennial of West Virginia statehood. Admitted to the Union on June 20, 1863, West Virginia became the only state created by separating from a Confederate state during the Civil War. The western counties of Virginia had long differed from the eastern plantation regions in economy, geography, and attitudes toward slavery. When Virginia seceded in April 1861, delegates from the western counties convened in Wheeling to form a loyal government and eventually petitioned Congress for separate statehood. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward. This bronze version of the West Virginia Centennial medal provided an affordable alternative to the silver issue in the D1963-1 series.

Rarity Notes

Bronze composition medal. Produced in larger quantities than the silver variant as the standard public sale option. Exact mintage not separately reported.
