Description

Bearing the Wexler Variety ID 1962 1¢ Pr WDDO-014, this proof Lincoln Memorial Cent doubled die obverse exhibits moderate extra thickness on the letters of LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, accompanied by distinctive notching on the lower portions of the L and I in LIBERTY. The notching — small, step-like irregularities along the edges of the letter strokes — is a hallmark of hub doubling that fell close enough to the primary impression to merge with it rather than producing a fully separated secondary image, yet far enough to create visible disruption along the letter profiles. This variety has a notable cataloging history: it was previously listed as WDDO-107 but was reassigned to the WDDO-014 position as part of a broader reorganization of the Wexler listings that followed the identification of four different doubled working hubs for 1962 proof Lincoln cents. That discovery — recognizing four distinct hub sources rather than treating each doubled die as an independent event — fundamentally restructured the understanding of 1962 proof DDO varieties by establishing familial relationships among groups of dies that inherited their doubling from the same parent hub. The obverse die carries a die gouge positioned west-southwest from the rim above the second T in TRUST, a marker that sits in the peripheral field area where it is easily examined without the glare complications that proof mirror surfaces introduce in the central design areas. No additional cross-references are currently known for this variety. Proof surfaces render the moderate extra thickness and LI notching with exceptional clarity, as the mirror-finish fields throw the broadened and irregular letter edges into sharp contrast.
