Description

Proof Jefferson Nickels from 1960 are prized for their mirror surfaces, and this large date variety adds a doubled die reverse to the equation. Attributed by the Wexler Team (Wexler Variety ID: 1960 1¢ Pr WDDR-023) and submitted by Daniel Griffin, the variety shows light Class II doubling on U in UNITED, left Memorial base, ONE CENT, and FG initials. Obverse markers: die gouges on upper right edges of O and D in GOD, die gouge in field right of D in GOD. Reverse markers: die gouge left of upper M of AMERICA, tiny die scratch NW from upper right diagonal crossbar of M in AMERICA, faded diagonal die scratch in Memorial bay 4, die gouge right of head on Lincoln statue. As a proof issue struck on specially polished planchets, the combination of large date designation and reverse doubling makes this a noteworthy attribution for collectors pursuing proof die varieties in the Jefferson Nickel series. A tiny die scratch runs northwest from the upper right diagonal crossbar of the M in AMERICA.
