1960 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-021

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as 1960 1¢ Pr WDDR-021, this proof variety displays an extremely close spread towards the center on USA on the reverse — a Class II distorted hub doubling where the secondary impression sits almost imperceptibly close to the primary. The obverse is identified as a Small Date variety, one of two date size variants found on the 1960 Lincoln Cent that makes this date among the most collected of the modern era. The obverse die marker is a light die scratch running SSW from the bottom of the Y in LIBERTY, while the reverse carries a small die gouge on the upper right of the O in ONE — two independent confirmation points for the specific die pair. The 1960 Small Date proof is significant in Lincoln Cent collecting because the transition between Large Date and Small Date hubs created one of the most recognized hub varieties of the 20th century, and doubled die varieties on Small Date proof dies carry additional interest. The extremely close spread on USA requires careful magnification and proper lighting to detect, as the secondary impression barely separates from the primary design elements.
