1960 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-017
Error
Description
Catalogued in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1960 1c Pr WDDO-017, this variety appears on a Small Date proof Lincoln Memorial Cent — an important diagnostic noted in the die markers. The doubling is a Class II spread toward the center on LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, decreasing from left to right on IGWT. Obverse die markers include a die gouge running south-southwest to north-northeast through the hair on the upper part of the head between GOD and WE, and a die scratch running southwest to northeast to the left of and above the bowtie. Reverse die markers consist of a die scratch running north-northwest to south-southeast through the top of the Memorial and into the top of the fourth bay, and a short die scratch running south-southwest to north-northeast on the right base of the Memorial. The 1960 Small Date vs. Large Date distinction is one of the most actively collected die variety details in the Lincoln Memorial cent series. Proof strikings of the 1960 cent were produced at Philadelphia; the Small Date proof is the less common of the two date varieties in proof format. The Memorial reverse was designed by Frank Gasparro and introduced in 1959.
