1960 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1960 5-cent Proof WDDO-004, this Jefferson Nickel presents a close Class II spread towards the center on IN GOD WE TRUST. Class II distorted hub doubling results from lateral displacement between hub impressions, producing uniform directional shift rather than the graduated intensity of pivoted varieties. The inward direction means the secondary impression compressed toward the die center, slightly narrowing the spatial relationship between IGWT letters. A key die marker accompanies the doubling: the obverse carries a Large Date, identifying which date hub was used — a meaningful distinction because 1960 Jefferson Nickels exist with both Large Date and Small Date variants, narrowing the die population. No significant additional die markers appear on either obverse or reverse beyond the Large Date classification. As a proof struck at the Philadelphia Mint on polished planchets, mirror-like fields provide excellent contrast for detecting the close Class II spread. The 1960 proof Jefferson Nickel was struck in copper-nickel composition. Examine IN GOD WE TRUST under 10x magnification for uniform inward thickening consistent with Class II displacement.
