1960 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005

Description

Showing strong spread towards the center on E PLURIBUS UNUM, the dots, USA, HALF DOLLAR, and the eagle, the 1960 WDDR-005 is a doubled die reverse on the proof Franklin half dollar designed by John R. Sinnock. The breadth of affected design elements indicates substantial hub distortion during die preparation. No significant obverse die markers were noted. Two small die gouges serve as diagnostic markers: one appearing as a dot midway up the vertical bar of the L in PLURIBUS, and another on the left vertical bar of the N in UNUM. This variety is cross-referenced as Flynn DDR-002 and carries the Wexler designation 1960 50¢ Pr WDDR-005. The Franklin half dollar, produced from 1948 through 1963, features Benjamin Franklin on the obverse and the Liberty Bell on the reverse, and proof specimens were struck at the Philadelphia Mint on polished planchets with specially prepared dies. The strong spread across five distinct reverse design groups makes this one of the more visually rewarding proof Franklin doubled die reverses, and the dual cross-referencing under both the Flynn and Wexler systems confirms its established place in the attribution literature.
