1960 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002
ErrorDescription
Appearing on the 1960 Proof Franklin Half Dollar, this WDDO-002 displays spread towards center on the date and IN GOD WE TRUST, with doubling intensity increasing from left to right. Additional close spread towards center is visible on LIBERTY, attributed to a doubled working hub impression. The 1960 issue holds historical significance as the last full year of Franklin Half Dollar production before the series was replaced by the Kennedy Half Dollar following President Kennedy's assassination in 1963. John R. Sinnock's portrait of Benjamin Franklin, introduced in 1948, has gained appreciation in the decades since. On the reverse, a small die gouge appears inside the upper R in AMERICA, providing a secondary diagnostic. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 1960 50c Pr WDDO-002. Proof Franklin Half Dollars were struck at Philadelphia with mirror fields that make doubled die characteristics easier to detect under magnification, and this final-year status adds interest to an already collectible variety.
