1960 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
Error
Description
Primary doubled die reverse for the 1960 Proof Franklin Half Dollar, WDDR-001 displays doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM, the dots, and the tail feathers, with lighter doubling on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, HALF DOLLAR, the bell clapper, the eagle's legs, and wing tips. Cross-referenced as Flynn DDR-001 and attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1960 50-cent Proof WDDR-001, this proof-only variety was struck on polished planchets using polished dies. John R. Sinnock's Franklin Half Dollar was in its thirteenth year, with only three years remaining before the Kennedy Half Dollar replaced it in 1964. Die markers on Obverse Stage A include a horizontal, slightly cupped die scratch through the center of the left loop of the B in LIBERTY. Struck in 90% silver at Philadelphia, where all proof Franklin Half Dollars were produced. The breadth of doubling — spanning multiple inscriptions, the eagle's feathers, legs, wing tips, and bell clapper — indicates a substantial hub misalignment affecting nearly every reverse element. As the primary DDR for the date, WDDR-001 (Flynn DDR-001) is the most significant doubled die reverse in the 1960 proof half dollar catalog. Reverse Stage B: A small die gouge can be found inside the C in AMERICA.
