1960 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006

Description

WDDO-006 is a Proof Franklin Half Dollar doubled die obverse documented by the Wexler Team and catalogued as Wexler Variety ID 1960 50¢ Pr WDDO-006. The doubling produces a very close spread directed toward the center, most clearly visible on IN GOD, with a companion spread toward the center on LIBERTY that is believed to originate from the doubled working hub used to impress this die. Two obverse die markers confirm the attribution: a short die scratch runs NNE from the top of the second T in TRUST, and a second die scratch runs through the design in a separately noted path. The 1960 Proof Franklin Half Dollar was struck in 90% silver at the Philadelphia Mint under Gilroy Roberts's design honoring Benjamin Franklin, which ran from 1948 through 1963. Proof Franklin halves of this era were produced with highly polished dies on burnished planchets and distributed in cellophane-wrapped sets. Cross-reference: Wexler Variety ID: 1960 50¢ Pr WDDO-006.
