Description

Appearing under the Small Date hub that Philadelphia adopted midway through 1960 production, WDDR-020 on the Lincoln Memorial Cent Small Date regular strike shares the strong centerward spread on UNITED, ONE CENT, and the designer's initials recorded on the Large Date version. The strong doubling on this variety stands in contrast to the many close or extremely close spreads that characterize other entries in the 1960 DDR catalog, making it comparatively accessible to collectors who have not yet developed the eye for detecting more subtle hub displacements. On the obverse, a die scratch runs from southwest to northeast through the six in the date, numerous die scratches populate the obverse field, and a die crack runs north from the top of the ear to the rim, passing by the D in GOD. This die crack represents progressive structural failure and indicates the die was retained in service well beyond its initial production window. The reverse carries die scratches running from southwest to northeast through the ED in UNITED, supplemented by numerous other die scratches throughout. Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1960 1¢ WDDR-020 with no other known cross-references, the Small Date hub is confirmed by the uniform date numeral proportions. Collectors should note that specimens showing both the strong doubling and an advanced die crack represent later die states and may appeal to specialists who prize die progression documentation.
