Description

The most extensively documented version of WDDR-013 in the 1960 Lincoln Memorial Cent catalog, this Large Date regular strike has been traced through two die stages on both the obverse and reverse, providing a detailed chronicle of how the die evolved during its service life. The reverse doubling presents as a close clockwise spread on the designer's initials, USA, and ONE CENT — the same text groups affected on the Small Date counterpart — with the Class III rotational displacement visible under magnification on the serifs and terminal strokes of the affected letters. In Stage A, the obverse carries a die scratch running from south-southwest to north-northeast to the right of the date, and numerous die scratches run from southwest to northeast to the right of the bust. Stage B retains these markers in weakened form and introduces a die crack running from west-northwest to the rim, passing through the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST. On the reverse, Stage A shows a long curved die scratch below the Memorial base extending from the bottom of the T in CENT to below the O in ONE, die scratches running from south-southwest to north-northeast below the NIT in UNITED, and die scratches running in similar direction between the A and M in AMERICA. By Stage B, a die crack has developed running from west to east through the letters of STATES and into the Memorial base, and the Stage A die scratch below the base is now much weaker but still visible. Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1960 1¢ WDDR-013 with no other known cross-references, the emergence of die cracks in Stage B reflects the progressive fatigue typical of Philadelphia's heavily used working dies during this high-production year.
