Description

The 1960 Proof DDO-010 is a doubled die obverse variety on the Philadelphia Mint Proof Franklin Half Dollar, cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-281 with die-marriage reference DMR-022. The obverse shows a medium spread on RTY of LIBERTY and on the date, with lighter spread on TRUST — placing the strongest doubling in the right-center area of the obverse while the motto receives a less pronounced but still diagnostic secondary impression. A doubled die on a Proof coin is particularly significant because Proof dies were prepared with greater care than business-strike dies, making hub-doubling errors less common. Three die stages have been tracked: Stage A is the early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B shows both obverse and reverse in mid-die state, and Stage C is the late die state (unconfirmed). The confirmed mid-die state provides a baseline for comparing doubling presentation across the die's life. The 1960 Proof Franklin Half Dollar was produced during the final years before the Kennedy Half Dollar replaced it in 1964, and doubled die Proof varieties from this transitional period attract strong collector interest.
