1960 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-007

Description

Reported by James Wiles, DDR-007 on the 1960 Philadelphia Washington quarter displays light spread on both the olive and laurel stems and the R of AMERICA on the reverse. The olive branch (left of the eagle) and laurel branch (right) are rendered with fine, delicate stems on John Flanagan's heraldic eagle design — details where even minor hub displacement generates visible offset because of their slender geometry. The simultaneous appearance of doubling on the stems and on the R of AMERICA indicates the hub misalignment affected both the lower and upper portions of the reverse die. Struck in 90% silver at 6.25 grams, the 1960 quarter belongs to the final era of precious metal circulating coinage, with only four years remaining before the Coinage Act of 1965 ended silver in regular-issue quarters. The DDR-007 designation reveals that at least seven doubled die reverse varieties have been cataloged for the 1960 Philadelphia quarter — a substantial count reflecting the thorough examination this date has received from variety researchers. Collectors should inspect the stems and the distinctive R under magnification for confirming secondary images.
