Struck as part of the Philadelphia Mint's 1958 proof production, this Washington Quarter carries a doubled die reverse cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1958 25-cent Pr WDDR-001. The doubling manifests as an extremely close spread towards the center on USA, QUARTER DOLLAR, and the branch ends — three design elements spanning both the inscription zone and the heraldic eagle's olive branches on John Flanagan's reverse. The centripetal direction, pulling secondary impressions inward toward the coin's center, indicates the hub shifted radially during die creation. On proof coins, the mirrored fields and frosted devices can make close spreads more visually apparent than on business strikes, as the polished die surface preserves fine detail with exceptional fidelity. No significant die markers have been documented on either obverse or reverse beyond the doubling itself.
