1958 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Bearing the distinction of appearing on the final year of the Lincoln Wheat Cent reverse design, this Wexler-attributed 1958 Proof WDDR-001 exhibits a strong clockwise spread from a pivot at approximately 5:00. The doubling affects E PLURIBUS UNUM, the decorative dots flanking the motto, and the left wheat ear and stem. The clockwise rotation from a 5:00 pivot point means elements positioned opposite the pivot receive the greatest displacement, explaining why the motto and upper wheat ear details show the strongest spread. No significant obverse or reverse die markers have been documented. The Wheat Cent motif had graced the one-cent coin since 1909 before yielding to Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse in 1959. As a proof issue, this coin was struck at the Philadelphia Mint with polished dies and planchets in Victor David Brenner's bronze composition — 95% copper with 5% tin and zinc — at 3.11 grams. The final-year status adds numismatic significance to any variety from the 1958 proof production.
