Description

Displaying light extra thickness on UNITED STATES OF with split serifs on AMERICA, the 1957 Proof Washington Quarter DDR-009 presents a subtle but distinctive form of hub doubling where the serif endings of letterforms show splitting — fine bifurcation at the terminal strokes created when the hub impressed the working die with slight displacement. Split serifs are among the more elegant doubled die diagnostics because they concentrate visible doubling at precise points rather than broad spreads. Die markers include UVC-0902 and DMR-016, with three documented die stages: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B where both reverse and obverse reach mid die state, and Stage C in late die state (unconfirmed).
