1957 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-010
Error
Description
Light spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and both upper wheat ears, intensifying from left to right, characterizes DDR-010 of the 1957 Proof Lincoln Wheat Cent. The graduated spread across the wheat ears suggests a pivoted or tilted hub impression where one side received greater displacement during die-sinking. Attributed by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-1905 and DMR-018, three progressive stages are documented: Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed, Stage B shows a die scratch on the rim above LUR of PLURIBUS at mid-die state with the obverse also at mid-die state, and Stage C reveals both reverse and obverse in late die state. This proof variety was struck from specially prepared dies at Philadelphia for annual proof sets, where mirror-like fields reveal even light spread more readily than on business strikes. Part of the Lincoln Wheat Cents series spanning 1909 through 1958, the 1957 proof cent is among the final issues carrying Brenner's wheat-stalk reverse before the Memorial reverse debuted in 1959. Struck in 95% copper and 5% tin-and-zinc, this late-series proof Wheat Cent documents graduated reverse doubling across motto and wheat ears.
